Lexicon data
A .lex file contains lexicon data: a word list with extra information. On Windows, speech recognition and input components use binary .lex files for pronunciations and word forms. Spell checkers use similar files. The Unix tool Lex uses the same extension for lexer source files. The content thus depends on the producer.
A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
