Registry entries file Reference

A .reg file contains entries for the Windows registry in plain text. The file lists keys and values in a simple export format. A double-click imports the entries with the Registry Editor after a confirmation. Administrators use .reg files to move or deploy settings. An import changes the system, thus care with unknown files is necessary.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
