TWAIN data source

A .ds file is a data source module for TWAIN, the scanner and camera interface. The file is a DLL that connects the TWAIN manager to one device. The system keeps such modules in the twain_32 directory of Windows. Scan applications reach the device through the data source. Other software also uses the short extension for its own data files.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
